Fort Dix

Fort Dix is an American military base in Burlington County, New Jersey . It was named after John Adams Dix in 1939 . The site houses a large military prison with 4,724 inmates. Reservists in particular have been trained here since October 1997.

In 1976 there was a local swine flu outbreak at the fort .

With the neighboring bases McGuire Air Force Base and Naval Air Engineering Station Lakehurst it was merged in 2005 to form the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst .

In 2007, a group of Islamists was convicted of planning an attack on Fort Dix.

A world-famous inmate was George Jung , whose life is reflected in the film Blow , and who was released from prison on June 2, 2014 after being transferred.
