The Pontifical Catholic University of Chile ( Spanish : Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile , short: PUC ) is a Chilean university under papal law with its seat in Santiago de Chile .

history

It was founded on June 21, 1888 by the Archbishop of Santiago, Mariano Santiago Casanova y Casanova (1833-1908). Joaquín Larraín Gandarillas (1822-1897), Archbishop of Anazarba, was the founding rector of the PUC. On July 28, 1889, it was recognized as a university by Pope Leo XIII. On February 11, 1930, the university was founded by decree by Pope Pius XI. recognized as a Pontifical University ; In 1931 it was fully recognized by the Chilean government.

It is one of six Catholic universities in Chile and one of 25 state-recognized Chilean universities. Access to the university is very difficult because of the high tuition fees and the Chilean admission system Prueba de selección universitaria . It is ranked as one of the best universities in Chile, and according to the new QS World University Rankings 2019 of the top 200 universities in Latin America, it ranks first. In 2006, 69 of the top 100 high school graduates named the PUC as their first preference. The PUC is a modern university; the San Joaquin campus has some contemporary buildings and also offers plenty of green space and sports facilities.

The university has 18 faculties with 31 academic units, spread over four locations in Santiago de Chile, as well as a regional campus in Villarrica in southern Chile. Around 67 master’s degrees and 27 PhD programs are offered.

27,319 (2013) students are looked after by over 4,000 employees, including approx. 1,261 professors and lecturers:

  • 22,654 students in postgraduate courses
  • 3,098 students in master’s courses
  • 942 students in doctoral programs (Ph.D.)
  • 625 students in postgraduate courses
