production

The Messenger is the directorial debut of Israeli screenwriter and former journalist Oren Moverman . Although Sydney Pollack , Roger Michell, and Ben Affleck were inclined to make the film, the conversation petered out and the producers eventually asked Moverman if he would like to direct the project. The film team worked closely with the US Army and Walter Reed Medical Center to gain experience on military life. Lieutenant Colonel Paul Sinor was at their side as a technical advisor.

criticism

“A soldier has to spend the last few months of his service on the 'home front' during the Iraq war and accompany a supervisor in delivering death reports to his bereaved relatives. A painfully intense examination of the collateral damage of the war as well as the convincing psychogram of two soldiers who cannot find their way back to peaceful normalcy even beyond the crisis area. The excellently played film meticulously traces the emotional damage and, in spatial poetics that reflects alienation, haunted the image of an identity crisis in which the 'war on terror' plunged the USA.
