Mariana Di Girolamo plays Ema in the title role

Owen Gleiberman of Variety writes that Ema doesn't tell a story at all, but rather that it is a series of random events, and that what happens in some scenes is somewhere between reality and metaphor. If someone is looking for a brand new, inimitable avant-garde girl who is as alien and liberated as has never been seen before, the money would not be badly invested in going to the cinema. Commercially, Gleiberman sees the film as doomed to failure. What the film has in common with Jackie is the way Pablo Larraín views his heroine. The 28-year-old Mariana Di Girolamo has a great presence of a timeless kind, similar to Greta Garbo , and it is she who holds the otherwise prismatic film together. As soon as Ema's son Polo is no longer in the picture, the film draws a crystal-clear portrait of a new female attitude in which men are irrelevant and unnecessary and in which women celebrate themselves. The film illuminates and channels this awareness, for example in scenes that Ema and her friends from the dance group show, who for Gleiberman are the best in the film and which he describes as intimate snapshots of a very special sisterhood. On the other hand, Ema uses a handsome bartender she's having an affair with just as a stud dog.
