Peru is a town in Oxford County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there lived 1541 inhabitants in 909 households on an area of 123.28 km².

According to the United States Census Bureau , Peru has a total area of 123.28 km², of which 120.90 km² is land and 2.38 km² consists of water .
Geographical location
Peru is in the east of Oxford County. The Androscoggin River flows through the area of the town in an easterly direction. To the southeast is Worthley Pond . The surface of the area is hilly, the highest point is the 649 m high Black Mountain in the south of Peru.

history
Merrill Knight, Daniel Lunt, William Brackett and Bradish of Falmouth received the grant for the area from the Massachusetts government. As the first settler, Merrill Knight and his family settled in 1793. More Falmouth settlers followed. The remainder of the township's land was given or sold to E. Fox, Lunt, Thompson, and Peck. As Plantation No. 1 the area was organized in 1812 and on February 5, 1821 the organization as Town followed. Samuel Thurston , US House Delegate for the Oregon Territory, grew up in Peru.
The area had different names before it was organized as a town. It became Township No. 1, South of the Androscoggin River , sometimes called West of the Androscoggin River , Partridgetown , or Thompsontown .
Land was given to Hartford in 1807 and to Rumford in 1825 and 1895. Parts of Canton were added in 1859. Large parts of Franklin Plantation , also Township No. 2 , were added in 1899, the rest of the township was added to Rumford.

traffic
The Maine State Route 208 runs through the northeast of the town, parallel to the Androscoggin River . US Highway 2 runs along the north bank of the Androscoggin River in the Dixfield area .
Public facilities
There is no hospital or medical facility in Peru. The closest are in Dixfield, Rumford, Canton and West Paris.
The Ludden Memorial Library is located on Main Street in Dixfield. It is the closest library to the people of Peru.
education
Together with Canton, Carthage and Dixfield, Peru belongs to the Maine School Administrative District 56 .

- TW Kelly Dirigo Middle School in Dixfield, with school classes from 6th to 8th grade
