Magdalena Matte

Magdalena Matte Lecaros (born August 13, 1950 in Santiago de Chile ) is a Chilean politician . From 2010 to 2011, she was Minister for Housing and Urban Development in the first cabinet of President Sebastián Piñera . Matte Lecaros is a member of the conservative Unión Demócrata Independiente (Independent Democratic Union; UDI) party.

Life, family, political career

Matte Lecaros is a great-granddaughter of the former Chilean President Arturo Alessandri on her mother's side . Her paternal grandfather, Arturo Matte Larraín , co-founded paper manufacturer Empresas CMPC , one of the largest companies in Chile, served as Minister of State and was a presidential candidate in 1952.

Magdalena Matte studied civil engineering at the Pontifical Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (PUC) in Santiago de Chile , where she met her husband Hernán Larraín , whom she married in 1974. Larraín, who has been publicly politically active in Chile since the 1990s, served as President of the Senate from 2004 to 2005 , was party chairman of the UDI several times and has been a member of the second Piñera cabinet as Minister for Justice and Human Rights since March 2018 . They have six children together, including the musician, lawyer and government advisor Hernán Larraín Matte (* 1975), the well-known film director Pablo Larraín (* 1976) and the cinema producer Juan de Dios Larraín (* 1979).

As a politically and socially engaged entrepreneur, Matte Lecaros is often involved in social projects and is known for her promotion of female business start-ups. After a corruption scandal involving the construction company Kodama , she had to resign from her ministerial office, in which she was in charge of the reconstruction after the devastating earthquake in Chile in 2010 , as President Piñera’s first minister under pressure from parliament.
