Leon Hirszman

Leon Hirszman (born November 22, 1937 in Rio de Janeiro , † September 15, 1987 in Rio de Janeiro) was a Brazilian director of Cinema Novo .

life and work

Leon Hirszman studied engineering and discovered his interest in film. In 1961 he made the contribution “Pedreira de São Diego” to the episode film “Cinco Vezes Favela”, which is considered the first film by the Brazilian Cinema Novo. Hirszman was married to Liana Maria Lafayette Aureliano da Silva, Mercedes Pires Fernandes and Norma Pereira Rego.

Hirszman's first film, “A Falecida / The Deceased” won the 1965 Festival do Rio jury special award . In 1967, Leon Hirszman shot a cinematic version of the bossa nova song The Girl from Ipanema . The feature film “São Bernardo” was shown in 1977 at documenta 6 .
