Midaq Alley (El callejón de los milagros) is a Mexican film drama from the year 1995 . Directed by Jorge Fons and written by Vicente Leñero based on the novel The Midaq Alley by Naguib Mahfuz from the year 1947th
action
The episode film consists of four parts, the plot of which is set in Mexico City . Rutilio owns a restaurant where his son Chava spends most of his time. Abel, the friend of his son Chava, dreams of working in the United States to impress and conquer his neighbor Alma. However, Alma is dedicated to José Luis.
Alma's mother Doña Cata works as a fortune teller ; she tells Susanita that she would meet the man of their dreams. Susanita meets Güicho, who works for Rutilio.
The married Rutilio has a homosexual relationship with Jimy. Chava finds out about this and attacks his father's lover.
Reviews
Derek Adams wrote in Time Out London that the film looked largely like a soap opera , but that it “ scores ” with speed and humor.
Christopher Null wrote on www.filmcritic.com that the film was little more than a long Mexican soap opera. The number of film prizes could only impress film buffs and film historians.
Awards
The film received the Mexican Golden Ariel and ten times the Silver Ariel in 1995 ; including for direction, the script, the film music, the editing and the performances by Luis Felipe Tovar and Margarita Sanz. He was nominated for the Silver Ariel in 11 other categories , including for the portrayals of Delia Casanova, Daniel Giménez Cacho, Ernesto Gómez Cruz, Salma Hayek, María Rojo, Tiaré Scanda, Esteban Soberanes and Óscar Yoldi as well as for the camera work and the sound .
The film received a special award from the Berlin International Film Festival in 1995 ; Jorge Fons was nominated for the Golden Bear . At the Chicago International Film Festival in 1995 the film was awarded the Audience Award. Jorge Fons and Margarita Sanz each won the Golden Kikito of the Brazilian Festival de Gramado in 1995 ; Fons also received the festival's critics' award and was nominated for the Golden Kikito in another category . Jorge Fons won the 1995 Guadalajara Mexican Film Festival Audience Award . He and Vicente Leñero were honored at the 1995 Festival del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano in Havana . The film won Mexico's Film Journalists' Silver Goddess Award in 1995 .
The film won the Goya for Best Foreign Film in Spanish in 1996 . In 1996 he received a special award from the Toulouse Latin America Film Festival for distribution. Margarita Sanz won the 1997 Golden Panambi of the Paraguay Film Festival .

The plot of the novel takes place in Cairo in the 1940s . The film was shot in Mexico City , where the action location has been relocated. It was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 15, 1995 . In distribution it was advertised that the film was the most award-winning film in Mexican history .
