Cannes International Film Festival / Best Screenplay
The prize for the best screenplay ( Prix du scénario ) honors the best performance by one or more screenwriters in a competition film (feature film) at the annual Cannes Film Festival . The award was first presented at the fourth edition of the film festival in 1949. The competition jury, which is usually composed of international filmmakers, votes on the award of the prize, which is presented to the winner in the form of a certificate.
Award winners
French and American screenwriters were most frequently awarded the prize for the best film script (6 wins each), followed by their colleagues from Italy (5), Great Britain, Russia and the People's Republic of China (2 each).
Although in the past the prize was expressly awarded several times to the best original screenplay of a competition film, today no distinction is made between a script that is not based on a previously published publication or an already published literary model (adapted screenplay). Authors from German-speaking cinema were successful for the first time in 2007 when Fatih Akin ( On the Other Side ) received the award.
