Edward Yang
Edward Yang ( Chinese 楊德昌 / 杨德昌 , Pinyin Yáng Déchāng ; born November 6, 1947 in Shanghai , † June 29, 2007 in Beverly Hills , California ) was a Taiwanese film director and screenwriter .
Life
Edward Yang grew up in Taiwan, studied computer design in the United States and then worked for a company in Seattle . When he was thirty, he decided to return to his native Taiwan as a filmmaker. Basically he wrote the scripts for his films himself and first appeared as a screenwriter for Der Winter 1905 . His first film as a writer and director was That Day at the Beach . Together with Hou Hsiao-Hsien , he was one of the representatives of the Taiwanese Nouvelle Vague . For his film Yi Yi he received, among other things, the prize for best directorial work at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival .
Yang died of colon cancer in late June 2007 at the age of 59 in Beverly Hills, California . He leaves behind his wife, concert pianist Kaili Peng, a son (* 2001), a younger sister and a brother.

- 1996: Alfred Bauer Prize , Honorable Mention at the Berlinale for Mahjong (Shake and bake)
- 2000: Best Director at the Cannes International Film Festival for Yi Yi (A One and a Two) , a film that tells of the problems and worries of members of a Taiwanese family.
