action
Pierre Arrignon is on the run with a boat because he is wanted in France for manslaughter of his lover. He succeeds in sneaking in as a stowaway on a freighter, which, however, is not on its way to South America, as he hopes, but docks in Genoa. A young girl helps him find a doctor. A little later he meets her mother Marta. Marta takes him home with her, the two fall in love and the young girl reacts with jealousy. In the meantime the Italian police are on him and are setting a trap.
German version
In the German dubbed version, mother and daughter are not Marta and Cecchina, but Malin and Janine.
criticism
“The neo-Jewish film, staged with great empathy, lets the couple Gabin / Miranda play far from their templates. The inner tension of the book has been implemented successfully. "
Awards
It won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, and both Clément and Miranda won awards at the 1949 Cannes Festival for Best Director and Best Actress.
