Malin Björk (born May 22, 1972 in Gothenburg ) is a Swedish politician of the Vänsterpartiet . Björk has been a member of the European Parliament since the 2014 European elections and defended her mandate in the 2019 European elections . She is a member of the GUE / NGL group .

Life

Malin Björk was born on May 22, 1972 in Gothenburg and grew up in the Västra Frölunda district . After finishing school, she studied political science and international relations at the University of Gothenburg .

Activity in Brussels

After completing her studies, Björk moved to Brussels to work for European Women's Lobby (EWL), an umbrella organization of the women's movement. From 2005 to 2008 she was a project manager at EWL for a Nordic-Baltic pilot project to establish cooperation in the region around prostitution and human trafficking.

Björk left the EWL at the beginning of 2009 to work as a project manager in the European Anti Poverty Network , but shortly afterwards switched to the secretariat of the European Parliamentary Group of the United European Left / Nordic Green Left . She worked there from 2009 and was responsible for accompanying the activities of the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality .

For the European elections in 2014 she ran for first place on the list of the Swedish left party Vänsterpartiet . In the election, the party won 6.3 percent and thus one of the 20 Swedish seats, so Björk moved in directly. She joined the group she already knew, the Confederal Group of the European United Left / Nordic Green Left , and was elected Vice-Chair from 2014 to 2017. For the group, she was a member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs and the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality in the eighth electoral term (2014-2019) . She was also a deputy member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs .

In the 2019 European elections , the Vänsterpartiet nominated her again for first place on the list. The party won 6.7 percent, so Björk was able to defend her mandate. She rejoined the GUE / NGL group. In the ninth electoral term (2019-2024) she is a member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety and a deputy member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs .

Private

Malin Björk was the first openly lesbian Swedish MEP. She lives in Brussels with her wife and two children.
