Monica Luisa Macovei (born February 4, 1959 in Bucharest ) is a Romanian politician . She was Romanian Minister of Justice and a member of the Democratic Liberal Party (DLP) until summer 2014 .

Life

Macovei studied law at the University of Bucharest . From December 2004 to April 2007, Macovei was the successor of Cristian Diaconescu ( PSD ) as Minister of Justice in Romania in the first government cabinet of Călin Popescu-Tăriceanu . Macovei has been a member of the European Parliament since 2009 .

In 2009 she successfully represented the Romanian Uniate Parish of Bucharest in the lawsuit for the return of property before the ECHR in Strasbourg .

Macovei left the DLP in 2014 after it did not want to put up its own candidate for the presidential election. Macovei then ran as an independent candidate. In the first ballot on November 2, 2014, she received 4.44 percent of the votes cast. Corruption in Romania was her main campaign issue .

In June 2015 she founded the party M10 (M to the power of 10). Until June 2016, she was also chair of M10.
