Damian Drăghici
Damian Drăghici (born March 31, 1970 in Bucharest ) is a Romanian politician and former musician . He has been a member of the EU Parliament since 2014 .
life and career
Drăghici was born in Romania and lived temporarily in the USA . He belongs to the Roma minority . He comes from a musical family. At the age of three he tried different instruments, and when he was ten he decided on the panpipe . In 1988 he left Romania and tried his hand at street music in Athens . He received a scholarship from Berklee College of Music in the USA; he completed his studies in two years. He is the first pan flutist in history to obtain a Bachelor of Music on this instrument.
He is known for his fast play because he plays three times as fast as pan flutists can on average. He has played with well-known musicians such as Paul Winter , Howard Levy , Glen Velez , Gary Thomas , Eugene Friesen , Randy Crafton , John Lockwood and well-known orchestras. In 2001 he played at the Night of the Proms with James Brown , Joe Cocker , Shaggy , Cyndi Lauper , Zucchero , the Gipsy Kings , Roger Hodgson and the Pointer Sisters . In the same year he gave a concert in Romania that was attended by 72,000 people. He was supported by 80 singers and 85 musicians. In 2006, Paul Winter Consort's album "Silver Solstice" , on which he is a guest musician, received a Grammy Award . He performed at Magic Home in Brandenburg.
In the 2014 European elections , Drăghici was elected to the European Parliament for the social democratic Uniunea Națională pentru Progresul României (UNPR, National Union for the Progress of Romania).
