Marienwarte on the Reinberg

The Marienwarte is an observation tower on Reinberg in the Upper Austrian municipality of Thalheim near Wels .

history

Marienwarte: View of the parish church Thalheim

In the early Middle Ages there is said to have been a fortification on the Reinberg (hence the field name Purgkhstall = Burgstall).

The Marienwarte was built on the initiative of the Beautification Association for Wels and the surrounding area. Initially, this association laid out paths on the Reinberg (1873) and planted trees on the Reinberg, which was previously meadows and pastures (1881). In 1891, Johann Ploberger made the space available for the tower construction free of charge. The building design comes from the chairman of the beautification association, Dr. Shower. The execution was entrusted to the builder Kunz.

The 22.8 m high tower was placed on a 1 ½ m thick concrete slab. After the construction of a material ropeway and a water pipe, the tower could be completed quickly. In gratitude to the donor of the property, the observation tower was named after the donor's wife. The Marienwarte was opened on July 7th, 1892. Obviously this was an attraction, because among the visitors was Empress Elisabeth on September 21, 1892 and shortly afterwards Emperor Franz Josef on December 2, 1892.

During the First World War , an air station was temporarily set up at the Marienwarte.
