Michael Schröder (born September 19, 1893 in Cologne , † March 20, 1962 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German politician ( SPD , SED ).

Life

Michael Schröder was born the son of a bricklayer. After attending primary school in Cologne, he worked as a marble cutter until 1913. In addition, he was a union member of the stone workers' association and a leading functionary in the youth workers. From 1913 to 1918 he worked as a reporter for the Rheinische Zeitung and in 1918 he was employed as head of the youth department of the German Metalworkers' Association . From 1920 to 1933 he worked as a career advisor for the Reichsanstalt für Arbeitsvermittlung und Arbeitslosenversicherung at the employment office in Cologne, initially as an inspector, then from 1928 as a senior administrative inspector. He had his residence in Cologne-Zollstock .

Schröder joined the SPD and from 1921 to 1933 was a member of the SPD district executive in the Upper Rhine Province. From 1929 to 1933 he was a city ​​councilor in Cologne. In the Reichstag election in 1930 he ran for the Reichstag , but was unable to move into parliament as a member. In 1932 he was elected to the Prussian state parliament, to which he belonged until 1933. After the National Socialists came to power, Schröder had to give up his political offices. He was fired as a career counselor, was initially unemployed and later worked as a dispatcher in a clay tube factory. In 1944 it was bombed out and relocated to Lutherstadt Wittenberg .

After the Second World War , Schröder was first district party secretary of the SPD before he was appointed city ​​treasurer in Wittenberg in August 1945 . In the course of the forced unification of the SPD and KPD to form the SED , he became a member of the SED. From 1949 to 1950 he acted as secretary of the SED district leadership in Wittenberg. Schröder was a member from 1946 to 1952 and President of the State Parliament of Saxony-Anhalt from November 1950 to July 1952 . From 1950 to 1954 he was also a member of the GDR - People's Chamber . After 1952 he was director of the bank for trade and commerce in Halle (Saale).
