Ramona Nicole Mănescu
Ramona Nicole Mănescu (born December 6, 1972 in Constanța ) is a Romanian politician (until 2017 PNL ). She was a member of the European Parliament from 2007 to 2013 and from 2014 to 2019 . She was also Romania's Minister of Transport from 2013 to 2014 and Romania's Foreign Minister from July to November 2019 .
education and profession
Mănescu studied law at the University of Bucharest from 1996 to 1999 . From 2000 to 2005 she worked as a lawyer with her own law firm in Bucharest . From 2004 to 2006 she completed several postgraduate courses, including at the Diplomatic Institute of the Romanian Foreign Ministry and at the Școala Națională de Studii Politice și Administrative din București (SNSPA), where she graduated with a master's degree in International Relations and European Integration. She has also written a number of articles in magazines and newspapers, as well as several books on European and security issues.
Political career
In 1990 Mănescu joined the Partidul Național Liberal (PNL). In 1996 she became chairman of the party's youth organization, the TNL, in Sector 6 in Bucharest. In the same year she became a member of the PNL's Foreign Relations Office, to which she was a member until 2004. From 2001 to 2002 she was international representative of TNL, after which she was its deputy chairman and she joined the PNL Executive Committee in Bucharest Sector 6. Furthermore, from 2003 to 2005 she was Vice-Chair of the International Federation of Liberal Youth (IFLRY), responsible for the coordination of the liberal youth organizations in Central and Southeastern Europe, the Middle East and South Caucus.
From 2002 to 2004 Mănescu was an expert and advisor to the Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Defense, Internal Affairs and National Security in the Romanian Chamber of Deputies . From 2005 to 2007 she was Vice-Chairwoman with the rank of Undersecretary in the National Youth Authority.
After Romania's accession to the EU, she was elected to the European Parliament in 2007, where she was a member of the liberal ALDE group . Her mandate was confirmed in 2009, and she subsequently had a seat on the Regional Development Committee and was delegate for relations with the Arabian Peninsula. Mănescu was vice-chairwoman of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe from 2012 to 2014 . From August 2013 to February 2014 she was Minister for Transport and Traffic in the Ponta II cabinet . She was the successor to the resigned Relu Fenechiu .
In the European elections in 2014 she was re-elected to the European Parliament, where she joined the Christian Democratic EPP group with the other PNL MEPs . In the legislative period up to 2019 she was deputy chair of the delegation for relations with the Mashreq countries, and she was also a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs. She left the PNL in July 2017.
On July 24, 2019, she succeeded Teodor Meleșcanu as Romanian Foreign Minister in the Dăncilă cabinet . Her term of office ended on November 4, 2019 with a vote of no confidence in Prime Minister Viorica Dăncilă .
