Parliamentary election in Finland 2003
The parliamentary elections in Finland in 2003 took place on March 16, 2003. It was the election for the 34th Finnish parliament .
The strongest force so far, the Social Democratic Party led by Paavo Lipponen , was able to gain ground, but lagged behind the Center Party with its top candidate Anneli Jäätteenmäki . The center gained seven seats and had two more seats in the new Reichstag than the Social Democrats. The third big party in Finland, the conservative rallying party of Ville Itälä , lost 2.5 percentage points and six seats.
There were also slight losses for the Left Alliance and for the Swedish People's Party. In contrast, the Green Bund, the Christian Democrats and the grassroots Finns brought in profits.
On April 17, 2003, the new Jäätteenmäki cabinet was sworn in. The center was formed by a coalition with the Social Democrats and the Swedish People's Party. However, due to a parliamentary affair, Jäätteenmäki resigned in the summer and Matti Vanhanen , also from the center, was her successor.
