The 1999 European elections in Finland took place on June 13, 1999.

Electoral system

Eleven parties or electoral associations were available for election.

Finland uses the open list system for elections , which determines the order of candidates not only by parties. The voters do not vote for a party themselves, but only for its candidates. The votes that all candidates of a party received together are used to determine the amount of seats that a party will receive. The D'Hondt method is used for this determination . Within a party, those candidates who have received the most votes become MPs. In this procedure, candidates who have received many votes but whose party does not have enough seats can lose to candidates with fewer votes but more free seats.

voter turnout

As in most other EU countries, voter turnout was low in Finland. After 60.3% of those eligible to vote had voted in 1996, this was only 31.4% in 1999.

Election result

The National Collection Party and the Green Bund were able to unite the strongest increases in votes, each with a gain of more than 5 percentage points. With this, the National Collection Party overtook the Finnish Center Party , which together with the Social Democratic Party of Finland suffered significant losses.

Both the Social Democrats and the Left Alliance lost a mandate each. While the Christian Federation of Finland suffered minor losses, it won an additional mandate. The Swedish People's Party regained a mandate.
