Erkki Raatikainen

Erkki Raatikainen (born May 24, 1930 in Jyväskylä , Finland , † late January 2011 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish politician of the Social Democratic Party of Finland (SDP) and long-time governor of the public broadcaster Yleisradio (YLE).

Life

After leaving school, the son of the social democratic politician Jussi Raatikainen began his professional career as a freelance journalist in 1948 , before he worked for the SDP's foreign publishing house between 1950 and 1955. He then worked for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) in London and then from 1958 to 1961 as an editor at Yleisradio. After working as an editor at the television broadcaster Suomen Television , he worked from 1964 to 1966, initially for the party newspaper of the SDP, and then for a short time again as a radio journalist at YLE.

In 1966 he became the successor to Kaarlo Pitsinki , who was Landshövding von Uudenmaan, party secretary of the SDP. He held this office until he was replaced by Kalevi Sorsa in 1969.

He then became governor and chief executive officer of the public broadcaster Yleisradio in 1970 after the previous governor Eino Repoa was dismissed. Raatikainen was given the task of modernizing the radio station, which was in crisis. In 1979 he was succeeded as governor and CEO of Yleisradio by Sakari Kiuru .

Afterwards he not only worked as a freelance journalist, but also wrote numerous books and biographies, for example about Mauno Koivisto and Kalevi Sorsa. His most famous publications include:

Erkki Raitikainen was married to the social democratic politician Kaisa Raatikainen , who died in 2007 of Alzheimer's disease, who ran for the office of President of the Republic of Finland in 1978 and 1982 and was Interior Minister in the cabinet of Kalevi Sorsa between 1984 and 1987.
