biography

Rijcklof van Goens was of East Frisian origin. The family probably comes from Gödens . His father Volckert Boukes (1572–1629) served in the Dutch armed forces and was stationed in Rees near Kleve ; his mother Hillegonde Jacobsdr came from Franeker . His uncle, born in Emden around 1580 , was in East India as early as 1624 and had convinced his father to work for the VOC rooms in Amsterdam. Van Goens was appointed commander of a company of soldiers and accompanied by his wife and children, the Van Goens left Texel in October 1628 with the ship Buren and arrived in Batavia on July 10, 1629. His parents died within a year and Rijklof was probably brought up by his uncle, who later became a lay judge in Batavia.
