Pieter Both

Pieter Both (* 1568 in Amersfoort ; † March 6, 1615 in Mauritius ) was the first Governor General of the Dutch East Indies .

Nothing is known about his early life. From 1598 Both was admiral in the Brabant Company . In the same year he sailed with four ships to the East Indies . When the newly founded Dutch East India Company set up a government for the East Indies, Pieter Both became the first Governor General. He held this position from December 19, 1610 to November 6, 1614 . During this time he made treaties with the Moluccas and conquered Timor . He was succeeded by Gerard Reynst . He left the island with four ships, two of which sank on March 6, 1615 near Mauritius and Pieter Both drowned.

The second highest mountain in Mauritius, Pieter Both, is named after him, as is an Airbus A350-900 from Air Mauritius.
