Jacques Specx

Jacques Specx (* 1585 in Dordrecht ; † July 22, 1652 in Amsterdam , Netherlands ) was a Dutch merchant who founded trade with Japan and Korea in 1609. Jacques Specx received assistance from William Adams in obtaining extended trading rights from Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu in Sumpu , which happened on August 24, 1609. This enabled Specx to set up a factory in Hirado on September 20, 1609 , of which he became the first director.

In 1620 he handed over two Catholic Japanese to the Japanese authorities. They had been captured by an English ship at sea and handed over to a Dutch ship. The two were tortured to death after long imprisonment.

From 1629 to 1632 he was Governor General of the Dutch East Indies and promoted trade with Japan. Back home he became an art collector .
