Jan Jacob Rochussen (born October 23, 1797 in Etten / Brabant , † January 21, 1871 in The Hague ) was a Dutch statesman. 1858-1860 he was chairman of the Council of Ministers.

Life

Rochussen was a typical representative of the Amsterdam business world and a confidante of Willems II , as well as Willems III. under which he was Minister of Finance . In 1843 he was one of the first ministers to be forced to resign by the Second Chamber of the States General . 1845-1851 he was governor general of the colony of the Dutch East Indies, and in 1858 he was appointed colonial minister and chairman of the council of ministers. Although he abolished slavery in the Dutch East Indies in 1859 , he was heavily criticized for his conservative administration on colonial issues.
