Titus Anthony Jacob van Asch van Wijck (born August 29, 1849 in Utrecht , † September 9, 1902 in The Hague ) was a Dutch politician of the Anti-Revolutionaire Partij (ARP), who was a member of both the Second Chamber and the First Chamber of States General was. He was also mayor of Amersfoort twice and between 1891 and 1896 Governor-General of Dutch Guiana . Most recently he was from 1901 until his death in 1902 Colonial Secretary in the Cabinet Kuyper .

Life

Titus Anthony Jacob van Asch van Wijck came from the noble family Asch van Wijck and was a son of Matthias Margarethus van Asch van Wijck , who was also a member of the Second Chamber between 1874 and 1882, and a grandson of Hubert Matthijs Adriaan Jan van Asch van Wijck who was also a member of the Second Chamber, the First Chamber and between 1827 and 1839 mayor of Utrecht . His uncle Hubert Alexander Maurits van Asch van Wijck was also briefly a member of the Second Chamber and Commissioner of the King of the Province of Drenthe . He himself became a member of the Second Chamber of the States General for the Anti-Revolutionaire Partij (ARP) for the first time on September 19, 1881 and represented the constituency of Zwolle until May 12, 1891 with short interruptions . At the same time he became mayor of Amersfoort for the first time on July 26, 1883 and held this office for almost eight years until June 1, 1891. During this period between July 1, 1885 and June 1, 1891, he was also a member of the Provinciale Staten of the Province of Utrecht .

As the successor to Maurits Adriaan de Savornin Lohman , Titus van Asch van Wijck took over the post of Governor General of Dutch Guiana on June 27, 1891 and held this office until May 12, 1896, when Warmolt Tonckens succeeded him. After his return he became a member of the First Chamber of the States General for the ARP on September 15, 1896 and represented the province of Utrecht in this until August 1, 1901. He was also involved in local politics again and was a member of The Hague City Council between May 17, 1898 and January 1, 1901 , before becoming mayor for the second time from January 1, 1900 to August 1, 1901 von Amersfoort acted. In addition, he was involved between 1900 and 1902 as a member of the school council association Een School met den Bijbel .

On August 1, 1901, Titus Anthony Jacob van Asch van Wijck took over the post of Minister of Colonial Affairs (Minister van Koloniën) in the Kuyper cabinet . He held this office until his death on September 9, 1902, after which Alexander Willem Frederik Idenburg succeeded him on September 25, 1902.

Titus van Asch van Wijck originally belonged to the Dutch Reformed Church , which he left in the wake of the schism (Doleantie) in 1886, and has belonged to the Gereformeerde Kerken in Nederland since 1892 . The Van-Asch-van-Wijck Mountains, located in the northern part of the Wilhelmina Mountains in Suriname , were named in his honor.
