Gerard Reynst (* unknown in Amsterdam ; † December 7, 1615 in Batavia (today Jakarta )) was a Dutch merchant and shipowner, descending from the Reynst patrician family , who was later appointed Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies .

Act

Nothing is known about his previous life. The only thing that is certain is that he was born in Amsterdam. In 1599, as a merchant and shipowner, he was co-founder and chairman of the Nieuwe (Neue), or the Brabantsche Compagnie (Brabantsche Company), which in 1600 became part of the Verenigde Compagnie van Amsterdam (United Company of Amsterdam), which in turn became in 1602 the Dutch East India Company (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie, VOC) passed.

In 1613 he became the second governor-general of the Dutch East Indies and traveled there with 9 ships. After the trip he took over the regime from Pieter Both . The trip itself lasted a year and a half. On the way he made trips to the Red Sea to start trade agreements with the Arabs . A year after arriving at the colony, Gerard Reynst died of dysentery so that there was little he could do other than minor but successful activities. Based on many statements, it is likely that he could depend on the profits and exploitation of the indigenous people.
