Life

Wehrmann was the son of a teacher at the Katharineum . He attended the school where his father worked and then from 1827 studied theology and history in Jena and Berlin. In Jena he became a member of the Jena fraternity around 1827/28 . In 1833 he returned to his hometown after a brief activity in Frankfurt am Main and passed his theological state examination there in 1833. In 1834 he became a teacher at the Ernestin School . He led the school until his retirement from teaching in 1854. During this time he became an active member of today Jung-Lübeck -called liberal circle of citizens, whose initiatives against the after the wars of liberation occurred restoration directed the state. In 1854 he took over the newly created position of state archivist of the Hanseatic city. As such, he was responsible for the reorganization of the important documents of the Hanseatic city from the time since the Middle Ages, which were then kept in the bar of the Marienkirche . These extensive holdings had last been superficially processed and organized by Lübeck Cathedral Provost Dreyer about a hundred years earlier. During Wehrmann's tenure, not least because of his commitment and assistance, the Lübeck document book , the Hanseatic document book and the Hanseatic Trials were published . He was responsible for editing seven of the twelve volumes of the Lübeck document book. In 1879, the Lübeck State Archives were given their own rooms in the building of the Higher Appeal Court at Königstraße 21 . In 1892, at the age of 83, he retired.

Wehrmann was a Freemason and from 1867 to 1889 Master of the Chair of the Lodge Zur Weltkugel , an active member of the Society for the Promotion of Charitable Activities and a member of all historical societies important for Lübeck, in whose journals he left a large number of publications. He was an honorary doctor of the universities in Göttingen (iur: 1881) and Rostock (phil: 1889). In 1889 the city of Lübeck awarded him its highest distinction, the Bene Merenti commemorative coin .
