Codex diplomaticus Lubecensis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Codex diplomaticus Lubecensis , the Lübeck document book, is an edition of sources on the medieval history of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck . It combines the texts of traditional diplomatic sources on the history of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck and the Diocese of Lübeck from the first written records to the end of the 16th century.

Emergence

The model and impetus for the creation of the Codex diplomaticus Lubecensis was the Codex diplomaticus Mœnofrancofurtanus , the document book of the Imperial City of Frankfurt, published in 1836 by the Frankfurt city archivist and librarian Johann Friedrich Böhmer . In Lübeck the judge Carl Wilhelm Pauli had already found lost archives of the Trese in 1834 and with this rediscovery gave the impetus to record, secure and research the extensive mediaeval document holdings in Lübeck. The publication of the Codex diplomaticus Lubecensis was taken over by the Association for Lübeckische Geschichte und Altertumskunde , which was formed in 1821 at the suggestion of Johann Friedrich Hach as a committee for the collection and preservation of historical sources in the Society for the Promotion of Charitable Activities . The great task was tackled in cooperation with the Oldenburg archivist Wilhelm Leverkus , who had started his career in 1837 as archivist at the archives of the Lübeck diocese in Eutin. The Codex diplomaticus Lubecensis is accordingly divided into two rows: the first section, the document book of the city of Lübeck (short: UBStL) and the second section, the document book of the Diocese of Lübeck .

Lübeck document book

The Lübeck document book in the narrower sense is embodied in the first section of the Codex diplomaticus Lubecensis , the document book of the city of Lübeck: 1139-1470 (= Codex diplomaticus Lubecensis I). Most of this source edition was handled by the first full-time Lübeck State Archivist Carl Friedrich Wehrmann (volumes 4–10) in the archive of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck .
