Abraham Patras (born May 22, 1671 in Grenoble , † May 3, 1737 in Batavia ) was Governor General of the Dutch East Indies from 1735 to 1737 .

Life

Patras came from a Huguenot family who fled to the Netherlands after the Edict of Nantes . He first worked at the office of Nathaniël Gauthier , who was also a Huguenot trader. From here he embarked on January 4, 1690 on board the Hobrée for India, in 1699 or 1700 he was stationed as a soldier in Ambon , and in 1703 in Ternate . From 1707 to 1711 he became a merchant in 1709, head of the branch of the Dutch East India Company in Djambi , from 1711 to 1715 head of Palembang , from 1717 to 1720 of the west coast of Sumatra . In 1724 he became director of the Dutch East India Company in Bengal . In 1731 Patras finally became a member of the Raad von Indië , the most important colonial organ in the Dutch East Indies. After the death of Governor General Dirk van Cloon on March 10, 1735, he won in a tight vote against his rival Valckenier and the day after he became Cloon's successor and held this position until his death.

In Jakarta, the Wayang Museum now houses the grave slab of Abraham Patras in a courtyard.
