Joan Maetsuycker
Joan Maetsuycker (also. Johan (n)) (born October 14, 1606 , † January 25, 1678 in Batavia ) was Governor General of the Dutch East Indies from 1653 to 1678 .
Act
Maetsuycker studied law in Leuven . He then practiced in The Hague and later in Amsterdam. In 1636 he went to East India. In 1644 he was sent to Goa , where he negotiated an armistice with the Portuguese. From 1646 he was governor of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka ) and in 1653 was governor general of the Dutch East Indies . He held this post for 25 years, longer than anyone. During his time there was the conquest of Makassar , the occupation of the west coast of Sumatra and the first expedition into the interior of Java . The well-known biologist Georg Eberhard Rumpf became his secretary in 1670 after the governor dismissed him because of his blindness (cataracts).
