Godert Alexander Gerard Philip Baron van der Capellen (born December 15, 1778 in Utrecht , † April 10, 1848 in De Bilt ) was a Dutch statesman.

Life

In 1808 he became Landdrost von Ostfriesland in Aurich and soon afterwards Minister of the Interior and Council of State . On his advice, King Ludwig Napoleon abdicated in 1810 in favor of his eldest son Ludwig II . Van der Capellen did not do anything under Emperor Napoleon . Wilhelm I , King of the Netherlands, appointed him colonial minister and sent him to Brussels as extraordinary secretary of state for the unification of the Netherlands to please the minds of the new government. In 1815 he became governor-general in Batavia , where he had to contend with indigenous uprisings, lack of money and failed speculations. Therefore, he was called back in 1825, was appointed President of the Board of Trustees of the University of Utrecht in 1828 , went to London as Ambassador Extraordinary for the coronation of Queen Victoria in 1838 and then became Lord Chamberlain of King Wilhelm II.
