Hirado ( Japanese 平 戸 市 , -shi ) is a city in Nagasaki Prefecture . It is located on the island of the same name, which is now connected to Kyūshū by a bridge.
history
In the Sengoku and early Edo periods , Hirado was an important foreign trade center, especially with Ming Dynasty China . After the founder of the Tokugawa dynasty, Tokugawa Ieyasu , had given the Dutch permission to trade in Japan in 1609, the Dutch East India Company (VOC) founded its first trading post (trading post) in Japan on Hirado. In 1612 Richard Cocks set up an English trading post as a representative of the English East India Company, which was abandoned in 1623 for economic reasons. Only loosely controlled by the local dynasty of Matsura, the Dutch enjoyed great freedom of movement in Hirado ("Firando"), but were forced to move to Dejima Island in Nagasaki Bay in 1639 by the Japanese government ( Tokugawa shogunate ) .
Head of the VOC trading office in Hirado:
- Jacques Specx : September 20, 1609 - August 28, 1612
- Hendrick Brouwer : August 28, 1612 - August 6, 1614

Until the end of the Edo period, Hirado served as the seat of the Hirado fiefdom . The Castle Hirado is now a symbol of the island. Here, as in the Matsura Museum, you can see the treasures of the House of Matsura, which have accumulated over two centuries.
