history

The city of Imari was created on April 1, 1954 through the merger of Imari ( 伊万 里 町 ), Yamashiro ( 山 代 町 ) and seven other villages ( 東山 代 村 , 黒 川村 , 波 多 津 村 , 南波 多 村 , 大 川村 , 松浦 村 and 二里 村 ) in Nishimatsuura County, Saga Prefecture. In the old Imari, the porcelain goods made in nearby Arita were shipped. Part of it went to Nagasaki and from there to Europe on ships of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Here they were highly valued as Imari porcelain .
