Sasebo ( Japanese 佐世保 市 , - shi ) is a city in Nagasaki Prefecture on the island of Kyushu in Japan . As a “core city” , Sasebo has also had a political big city status with more self-government since 2016 .

geography

Sasebo is north of Nagasaki and west of Fukuoka .

In the west is the East China Sea , in the south the Sasebo Bay and behind this the Ōmura Bay . The Hario Strait between these two bays is bridged by the Saikaibashi ( West Sea Bridge ), which is part of the national road 202 .

history

Sasebo was founded in 1902. On June 29, 1945, the city, which at that time had a population of 206,000, was 48% destroyed by an American air raid. On March 31, 2010, the northern small towns of Emukae and Shikamachi in the Kitamatsuura-gun were incorporated into Sasebo.

Attractions

  • Opposite the main train station, the Seishin Church, Sasebo's landmark, rises up in the Miura-chō district, built in 1930 in the neo-Gothic style and visible from afar. Sasebo is the only city in Japan whose landmark is a church.
  • The easiest way to reach the Kujūkushima archipelago is from the fishing port of Ainoura, which is a few kilometers northwest of the center of Sasebo.
