The Ōmura Bay ( Japanese 大村 湾 , Ōmura-wan ) is a bay in the East China Sea in the center of the Japanese prefecture of Nagasaki .
geography
The bay measures about 26 km in north-south direction and about 11 km in east-west direction. The coastline is 360 km and the area 320 km², which corresponds to about 8% of the total area of the prefecture. With an average of 14.8 m and a maximum of 54 m water depth, it is also comparatively shallow for its size.
A special feature of the bay is that it is surrounded by land from all four directions and therefore resembles a lake in shape. The only connection to the sea is in the northwest with the eastern, at its narrowest point only 200 m wide, Hario Strait ( 針 尾 戸 , Hario-seto ) and the western, 10 to 200 m wide, Haiki Strait ( 早 岐 瀬 戸 , Haiki -seto ). On the opposite side there is no open sea, but Sasebo Bay ( 佐世保 湾 ). The island of Hario-jima ( 針 尾 島 ) lies between the two straits , while the Nishisonogi Peninsula ( 西 彼 杵 半島 , Nishisonogi-hantō ) lies west of the Ōmura Bay and the foot of the mountain Kotonoo-dake ( 琴 ノ 尾 岳 ) lies south . On the east coast is the Ōmura plain ( 大村 平野 , Ōmura-heiya ), which is covered by the city of the same name.
Opposite this is the largest island within the bay, Mishima , on which Nagasaki Airport is located and which was heavily heaped up for this purpose.
The communities along the bay are clockwise: Sasebo , Kawatana , Higashisonogi , Ōmura , Isahaya , Nagayo , Togitsu , Nagasaki, and Saikai .
biology
Since there is only a small amount of water exchanged with the sea due to the aforementioned conditions, the bay is populated by its own fauna. The rare porpoise , for example, lives in the bay and never leaves it for its entire life. Another particular population is a living fossil called Horseshoe Crab the type Tachypleus tridentatus . Despite its isolation and the big cities on the shore, the bay is very rich in fish and around 60 different marine species are fished.
