The Nagasaki Airport ( Jap. 長崎空港 , Nagasaki Kuko ) is an international commercial airport in Japan , on the island of Mishima ( 箕島 ) in the Ōmura Bay west of the city Omura in Nagasaki Prefecture was built.
A special feature is that the existing island was almost completely transformed into a typical airport island, whereby the existing island area was enlarged from 0.9 km² to 2.4 km² and the entire shape of the island was changed through erosion and landfill. Nagasaki Airport is a 2nd class airport according to Japanese law . The construction phase lasted about three years, from 1972 to 1975. The airport was then opened on May 1, 1975. The construction cost was 180 billion yen. A 970 m long bridge was built to connect the airport with the main island of Kyushu .
With the exception of one connection to Seoul , South Korea and one to Shanghai , PR China, there are only domestic connections.
