Karatsu ( Japanese 唐 津市 , - shi ) is a city in Saga Prefecture on the island of Kyushu in Japan .

Its name, which consists of the Kanji kara ( China ) and tsu ( port ), shows its historical importance as a port city for shipping to China.

history

The city was founded on January 1, 1932 . On January 1, 2005 , 6 cities and one village that used to be part of Higashimatsuura County were incorporated. This made Karatsu the largest city in Saga Prefecture. On January 1, 2006, Nanayama Village was also incorporated.

Culture and tourism

The Karatsu Castle dominates this former castle town .

Karatsu is famous for its Karatsu-Kunchi - Matsuri , which takes place from November 2nd to 4th annually and attracts around half a million visitors. During the festival, hikiyama (rafts) are carried through the narrow streets of the city, with visitors saying “Enya! Enya! ”Shout. The dark glazed Karatsu ceramics (唐 津 焼, Karatsu-yaki), which have Chinese and Korean influences, are also known.

The offshore island of Takashima is known nationwide for the Hōtō shrine, which is said to be lucky enough to play the lottery.
