Karatsu Castle

The Karatsu Castle ( Japanese 唐津城 , Karatsu-jō ) or "Dancing Crane-Castle" ( 舞鶴城 , Maizuru-jō ) is located in the city of Karatsu , Saga Prefecture .

history

In 1595 Terazawa Hirotaka , a high vassal of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, received the area around the mouth of the Matsuura River . After the Battle of Sekigahara , in which Tokugawa Ieyasu had distinguished himself on the side , he also received the area of Amakusa with 40,000 koku and was now daimyo with an income of 123,000 koku. From 1602 he built the castle complex with the island of Mantō (43 m), which is located at the mouth of the Matsuura River in Karatsu Bay. At the same time he merged the Hatagawa River with the Matsuura River and diverted both with a canal so that they now flowed east into the sea instead of west of the island. In 1608 the new system was ready.

Terazawa was followed by the Ōkubo (83,000 Koku), the Ōgyū-Matsudaira (73,000 Koku), the Doi (70,000 Koku), the Mizuno (60,000 Koku) and finally the Ogasawara (60,000 Koku).

During the Meiji period , the residence in Ni-no-maru became a Han English school for a short time, then a general school. Eventually the castle was demolished, the material sold and the site left to decay. But then in 1876 the area was designed as a public park at the request of the former vassals. In 1966 the castle tower was rebuilt, after which the gate to the main castle, watchtowers ( Tatsumi-yagura , Ryōsho-yagura ), ramparts and moats ( Higo-bori , Yanagi-bori ) were restored.

The attachment

On the Inselberg was the Hommaru, divided into an upper terrace (kamidan) and a lower terrace ( shimodan ), which rose above the island base. Before that, Ni-no-maru, San-no-maru and the Sotoguruwa were laid out. At the time (1608), however, only the stone base of the castle tower on the upper terrace existed. For the construction of the castle, Hirokata obtained building materials from Hideyoshi's old Nagoya Castle .
