Hirado Castle was built on Mount Kameokayama ( 亀 岡山 ), which is surrounded on three sides by the sea, the Hirado Strait ( 平 戸 瀬 戸 , Hirado-seto ). In 1599 the first prince of the Han , Matsura Shigenobu ( 松浦 鎮 信 ; 1559-1614) built a castle there called Hinodake ( 日 之 之 ), which burned down in 1613. After that, the prince resided in the Nakanotachi ( 中 之 館 ) or Otachi ( 御 館 ) in the second castle area ( 二 の 丸 , Ni-no-maru ).

It was not until 1704 that Matsura Takashi ( 松浦 棟 ; 1646–1713) began building a new castle on the remains of the old one with special permission from the Shogunate. He refrained from building a castle tower ( 天 守 閣 , tenshukaku ). To honor the ancestors of the Matsura, there was a shrine in the second part of the castle called Reichinzan-jinja ( 霊 椿 山 神社 ). This continues to exist today under the name Kameoka-jinja ( 亀 岡 神社 ).

The wooden bridge over the Toishi-gawa ( 戸 石川 ) River , which flows into Kagamiura Bay ( 鏡 浦 ), was previously called Saiwaibashi ( 幸 橋 ). It was replaced by a stone arch bridge in the European style in 1715. In 1783 the Han school Ishinkan ( 維新 館 ) was relocated to the outside area, the Sotokuruwa ( 外 曲 輪 ). For this purpose, a new military training area was created there.

The plant today

In 1957 the innermost castle area, the Hommaru ( 本 丸 ), the second area Ni-no-maru and the third area ( 三 の 丸 , San-no-maru ) became the Kameoka Park ( 亀 岡 公園 , Kameoka-kōen ). Above all, the stone walls, the Kitakoguchi-mon gate (北 虎口 門), the Tanuki watchtower ( 狸 櫓 , Tanuki-yagura ) and the associated earthen walls, the Saiwai Bridge - now the "Holland Bridge" ( オ ラ ン ダ 橋) have been preserved , Orandabashi ) - and the waterless ditch at the First Main Gate ( 一 の 大 手 門 , Ichi-no-Ōtemon ).

In 1962 a castle tower was built on the foundations of the former Okimi watchtower ( 沖 見 櫓 , Okimi-yagura ). The watchtowers Inui-yagura ( 乾 櫓 ), Jizō -yagura ( 地 蔵 櫓 ), Kensō-yagura ( 見 奏 櫓 ) and Kaijū-yagura ( 懐 柔 櫓 ) were also rebuilt.
