Rudolf Holsti

Eino Rudolf Holsti (born October 8, 1881 in Jyväskylä , † August 3, 1945 in Palo Alto , United States ) was a Finnish sociologist and politician. Holsti represented Finland as Foreign Minister for two terms (1919–1922, 1936–1938).

Life

Career

Holsti studied sociology in England and did his doctorate on the subject: “ The Relation of the War to the Origin of the State. “In 1913. A short teaching position followed. In 1913 he was elected to the Finnish state parliament and was a senator in the Tokoi government from 1917 . In 1918 Holsti was a member of the Finnish delegation that negotiated Finland's independence with the Entente powers. On May 4, 1919, he was appointed Finnish Foreign Minister. After the failure of his foreign policy, he resigned as foreign minister in 1922. From February 1923 he worked as the Finnish envoy in Reval ( Estonia ). At the same time he was the Finnish representative to the League of Nations and later became envoy to Latvia and Switzerland . From 1936 to 1938 Holsti was foreign minister again. From February 17, 1937 to March 12, 1937 he was interim Prime Minister in the Cabinet Kallio IV of Kyösti Kallio , who was elected President. From 1941 he taught at Stanford University in the United States .

He was married to Liisa, with whom he had two children. The two sons Ole (* 1933) and Kalevi (* 1935) both became political scientists .
