Mathieu Grosch

Mathieu Jean Hubert Grosch (born September 14, 1950 in Eupen ) is a Belgian politician and member of the German-speaking Christian Social Party (CSP). Between 1994 and 2014 he was a member of the European Parliament .

Life

education and profession

Grosch studied German at the University of Liège and graduated in 1973 with a licentiate . In 1974 he received his accreditation for teaching in upper school and then worked as an English and German teacher until 1981.

From 1981 to 1983 Grosch acted as advisor to the then Prime Minister Wilfried Martens and worked from 1984 to 1986 in the cabinet of the Prime Minister of the German-speaking Community (DG) Joseph Maraite . In addition, Grosch was appointed Minister for Social Affairs, Sport and Youth in the government of the German-speaking Community in 1986 and held this office until 1990.

From 1991 to December 2012 Grosch was mayor of the Kelmis community .

Since July 2014 Grosch has held the position of European coordinator for the TEN-T core network corridor "Orient / Eastern Mediterranean" on behalf of the European Commission's Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport.

Parliamentary career

From 1984 to 1985 he was also a member of the Provincial Council of Liège Province and then from 1986 to 1994 a member of the Council of the German-speaking Community, which he chaired from 1990 to 1994. In his function as a member of the European Parliament , he had an advisory voice in the Parliament of the German-speaking Community from 1994 to 2014. From 1994 to 1996 Mathias Cormann , today's Minister of Finance of Australia, was Grosch's assistant.

In 1994 Grosch was elected to the European Parliament as the only member of the German-speaking constituency of Belgium and was re-elected for this mandate in 1999, 2004 and 2009. In 2009, his party only needed 32.2 percent for this, compared with 42.4 percent five years earlier. He was a member of the Group of the European People's Party and European Democrats , as well as the Committee on Transport and Tourism and the delegation to the EU- Mexico Joint Parliamentary Committee . As an alternate member, Grosch was also on the Employment and Social Affairs Committee and the delegation for relations with Japan .

Other offices

He is also a member of the Robert Schuman Foundation and has been a member of the Board of Directors of Liège Airport since 1996 .

Honors

Grosch has received several awards for his services. In 1999 he received the title of Commander of the Order of Leopold , in 1999 the Medal of Merit of the Euregio Meuse-Rhine and in 2004 the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Federal Republic of Germany .
