Mathias Hubert Paul Cormann (born September 20, 1970 in Eupen , German-speaking Community , Belgium ) is an Australian politician with Belgian roots. He has been Australia's Minister of Finance since September 18, 2013 . He is a member of the Liberal Party of Australia , before that he was a member of the Christian Social Party of Belgium until 1996 .

Personal

Born in Eupen, the capital of the German-speaking community of Belgium, Cormann grew up in Raeren near Aachen . He attended a university in Liège and completed his legal candidacy at the University of Namur . Then he joined in 1994 a law degree from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Leuven from. During his studies, he took part in an exchange with the University of East Anglia in Norwich , England , where he learned the English language intensively for the first time . In 1994 he first visited Perth (capital of the state of Western Australia ) and finally emigrated to Australia in 1996. Since his Belgian law degree was initially not recognized in Australia, Cormann worked briefly as a gardener. In 2000, he received Australian citizenship and lost Belgian citizenship at the same time. Cormann is married and has two daughters.

In 2018, Cormann received the Great Federal Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany with a star and shoulder ribbon for his efforts to deepen Australian-German relations .

Political career

In the 1990s, Cormann was active in the East Belgian Christian Social Party and was president of the Raeren CSP local section, ran for the Provincial Council of the Province of Liège and was a member of the Raeren local council for a short time. At times he was also the assistant to MEP Mathieu Grosch .

After emigrating to Australia, he joined the Liberal Party of Australia in 1996 and was vice-chairman of the party in the state of Western Australia from 2003 to 2004. As of 2007, Cormann replaced Ian Campbell as MP for Western Australia in the Australian Senate . He was accordingly re-elected in the following parliamentary elections in 2010 and 2016. Under Tony Abbott he became Minister of Finance for Australia in the Abbott government in September 2013 , which was continued under Malcolm Turnbull in the Turnbull I and II governments . From 2015, Cormann was Deputy Government Leader in the Senate; before assuming the office of government leader in the Senate on December 20, 2017. In the government Morrison I of Prime Minister Scott Morrison Cormann was re-appointed on August 28, 2018 as finance minister.

Since the actual Deputy Prime Minister of Australia, Barnaby Joyce, was unable to attend due to a family scandal, Cormann was until February 26, 2018 representatively executive from February 21, 2018 Prime Minister of Australia.

After Malcolm Turnbull resigned as Prime Minister on August 23, 2018, the government was also dissolved. In the government of Prime Minister Scott Morrison , Cormann was reappointed Treasury Secretary on August 28, 2018.

As of September 30, 2019, Cormann has been the longest-serving Treasury Secretary in Australia.

At the beginning of July 2020, Cormann announced his retirement from politics at the end of the year.
