564th People's Grenadier Division

The 564th Volksgrenadier Division was a major combat unit of the German Wehrmacht during World War II .

Mission history

The division was set up at the end of August 1944 in the 32nd wave of formation on the Döllersheim military training area for military district XVII from the shadow division Döllersheim set up at the beginning of August as the 564th Grenadier Division . At the end of August it was renamed the 564th Volksgrenadier Division .

Still in the formation phase, the division was merged on September 15, 1944 with the 183rd Volksgrenadier Division , which was newly formed from the former 183rd Infantry Division.

The division's commander was Lieutenant General Wolfgang Lange , who then took over the 183rd Volksgrenadier Division.
