559th Grenadier Division

The 559th Grenadier Division was a German infantry division during World War II . The division was set up on July 11, 1944 at the Baumholder military training area. In August and September 1944, the unit fought against the US Army in Lorraine . Renamed the 559th Volksgrenadier Division on October 9, 1944 . Fights followed in Saarland , the Palatinate , in the Mannheim area and in the Odenwald . At Plochingen the unit suffered very heavy losses and then withdrew further and further south. Remnants of the unit reached Kempten in the Allgäu on April 26, 1945 . These remnants of the division retreated even further as far as Tyrol and capitulated in the Inn Valley to Western Allied troops.
