After a short deployment in the western campaign in the 1st Army , the division remained in the west as an occupying force. She then moved back to Military District VII and from there in June 1941 to the Generalgouvernement in the Association of the 4th Army of Army Group Center . From June 22, 1941, the 167th Inf.-Div. participated in the Russian campaign, which led them via Pinsk , Bobruisk , Jelnja , Brjansk to the Orel area , where they experienced heavy winter fighting and suffered heavy losses under the leadership of the 2nd Panzer Army .

To freshen up, the division moved to the Netherlands at the end of April 1942, where it was brought back to normal strength and re-trained under Commander-in-Chief West .

At the beginning of March 1943, the division moved to Army Group South in the Kharkov area , where it was deployed until August 1943, first with the II. SS Panzer Corps , then with the XXXXVIII. Panzer Corps in the 4th Panzer Army .

After heavy losses, they only led the OKH as a "combat group". This went as part of the 8th Army across the Dnieper , which was to be permanently defended as the "Eastern Wall". Both at Cherkassy and at Kremenchug , the "Kampfgruppe 167th Inf.-Div." Was in constant defensive battles. On February 1, 1944, due to the heavy losses and lack of replacement, the division was dissolved, its infantry remnants and two of the four former artillery divisions as so-called "Divisionsgruppe 167" of the 376th Inf.-Div. were assigned, which in turn was destroyed in Romania in August 1944.

From September 2, 1944, the so-called " Shadow Div. Niedergörsdorf ”in the line-up on the Döllersheim military training area in military district XVII . The remains of the in France destroyed 17 Felddiv. (L) were also used. On October 25, 1944, this association was renamed the 167th Volksgrenadier Division and assigned to Military District VII.
