The 196th Infantry Division was a major unit of the Army of the German Wehrmacht in World War II .

history

The division was set up in 1939 as part of the 7th wave of formation in military district XX (Danzig) . In 1940 she was given additional field replacement battalions 6, 16 and 26. In September 1940, Infantry Regiment 345 and 1st Battalion / Artillery Regiment 233 were transferred to the 199th Infantry Division.

In 1940 the division took part in the Weser exercise to occupy Norway and remained there until 1944. Stationed in Drontheim / Norway. She was the higher command z. b. Subordinated to V. XXXIII and equipped with mountain equipment. In April 1940 there was a clash of the division with British troops near Lillehammer , but they were repelled.

The expansion to the status of an eastern division took place in January 1944. In July 1944 the division was transferred to the eastern front and subordinated to the Army Group Center . With the 3rd Panzer Army the division was deployed in the Vilna area, and in August 1944 with the 4th Army near Alytus . It was destroyed during the Soviet summer offensive and disbanded on September 15, 1944. The remnants were assigned to the 131st and 361st Infantry Divisions .
