Kenny 'Dope' Gonzalez (born June 7, 1970 in Brooklyn / New York ; full name Carl Kenneth Gonzalez ) is an American DJ and music producer.

Career

Gonzalez is the son of Puerto Rican immigrants. At first he worked as a buyer for a record store in Brooklyn and co-hosted parties with Mike Delgado in their neighborhood. But when these got out of hand more often, he shifted more to work in the recording studio. Todd Terry helped him out with the studio equipment and also hooked him up with Little Louie Vega . The two of them have been successful as a remixer / producer duo under the name Masters at Work since 1990 .

In addition, Gonzalez repeatedly released solo recordings and started projects, the most successful of which was The Bucketheads . In the mid-1990s he spontaneously recorded The Dungeon Tapes under this name in response to the commercial Eurodance style. In it he mixed older classics into new dance songs. The song The Bomb (These Sounds Fall into My Mind) was released as the first single and became a huge hit first in the UK and then in the rest of Europe. Also in the USA, where the piece was only a B-side at first, it finally also conquered the charts and became a number one hit on the dance charts. For the single he used the wind intro from the song Street Player by the band Chicago , which in the meantime earned him a copyright dispute and a royalty payment of 30,000 US dollars. A second hit of the project was Got Myself Together , also a top hit on the US dance charts.

Other names Gonzalez has published under include K-Dope, House Brigade, House Syndicate, Power House, The Swing Kids, and The Untouchables. Alone and with Vega, he has published countless remixes and productions over the years, which also earned him three Grammy nominations. He has worked solo for BeBe Winans , Patti Austin , Jody Watley , George Benson and Shirley Bassey, among others .
