Anne-Marie Cécile J. "Annemie" Neyts-Uyttebroeck (born June 17, 1944 in Ixelles / Elsene ) is a Belgian politician of the Open Vlaamse Liberalen en Democrats (Open VLD) party. She has been a member of the European Parliament since 1994, and since September 2005 chairwoman of the European Liberal, Democratic and Reform Party (ELDR).

Life

Neyts-Uyttebroeck obtained her licentiate in Romance studies at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel in 1967 and in 1970 her licentiate in press and communication studies at the same university. In 1967 she passed the teaching qualification and worked as a French teacher at the Koninklijk Atheneum in Zaventem until 1973 .

In 1973 she took over the post of press attaché in the cabinet of the then Justice Minister Herman Vanderpoorten and then worked from 1975 to 1981 as Deputy Head of Cabinet of the Deputy Governor of Brabant . She got involved in the Partij voor Vrijheid en Vooruitgang (PVV), which was named Vlaamse Liberalen en Democrats (VLD) in 1992 and Open Vlaamse Liberalen en Democrats (Open VLD) in 2002 . From 1977 to 1986 and later from 1995 to 2004 she was chairwoman of PVV Brussels City and VLD-Brussels City. In addition, from November 1985 to June 1989 she held the office of regional chairman of the PVV and from 1993 to 1997 the office of deputy chairman of the VLD.

At the local level, Neyts-Uyttebroeck was a member of the local council in Brussels from 1982 to 1989 . In addition, she held various positions in the context of her work for the Liberal International : From 1989 to 1996 she was its treasurer, then until 1999 its deputy chairwoman and then until 2005 its chairwoman.

Neyts-Uyttebroeck was a member of the Belgian Chamber of Deputies from 1981 to 1994 and from 2003 to 2004 . In between, she was Foreign Minister of the Brussels-Capital Region from 1999 to 2000 as the successor to Jos Chabert .

From 2001 to 2003 she was Minister of Agriculture. In the European elections in 1994 she was elected to the European Parliament , to which she has belonged ever since. She is a member of the ALDE Group as well as the Committee on Foreign Affairs , the Subcommittee on Security and Defense and the Delegation for Relations with the United States.

On January 30, 1995, she was awarded the honorary title of Minister of State for her political services .
