Jozef Philippe Antoon (Jos) Chabert (born March 16, 1933 in Etterbeek , Brussels-Capital Region , Belgium , † April 9, 2014 in Brussels ) was a Belgian politician from the Christian Democratic Vlaams (CD&V).

biography

After schooling Chabert studied law and graduated with promotion to Doctor of Law from. 1965 he was elected Assistant Secretary of Finance of the City Meise ; he held this position until 1976.

In 1968 he was elected a member of the Chamber of Deputies and represented the interests of CD&V there until 1982.

In January 1973, Prime Minister Edmond Leburton appointed him Minister for Flemish Culture and Affairs in Flanders' government. After Prime Minister Leo Tindemans took office in April 1974, he took over the post of Minister of Transport and kept this post until 1980 under Tindeman's successors Paul Vanden Boeynant and Wilfried Martens . In this post he also appointed experts from the National Railway Company (NMBS / SNCB) such as Etienne Schouppe on his advisory board. At the same time he was Minister for Post, Telephone and Telegraphy (PTT) between 1974 and 1977. As part of a cabinet reshuffle, Prime Minister Martens appointed him Minister for Public Works and Institutional Reforms in 1980 and held these posts until Martens' term ended in April 1981.

After leaving the Chamber of Deputies, he was elected a member of the Senate in 1982 . He also became a member of the Parliament of the Brussels-Capital Region on July 12, 1989. He belonged to this until January 1, 2004 and then again from July 19, 2004 to June 7, 2009. Between 1989 and 2004 he was a minister in the government of the Brussels-Capital Region, where he was foreign minister from 1989 to 1999 and at times finance minister. During his tenure there, the current Belgian Foreign Minister, Steven Vanackere, was his Deputy Head of Cabinet and Head of Cabinet.

He was also chairman of the European People's Party (EPP) in the Committee of the Regions of the European Union created in 1994 .

During his membership in the parliament of the capital region, he was first vice-president between July 19, 2004 and October 17, 2006 and then its secretary from October 18, 2006 to June 7, 2009.

On November 30, 2009, together with Frank Vandenbroucke and Armand De Decker, he was awarded the honorary title of Minister of State for his political services .
