Steven Vanackere (born February 4, 1964 in Wevelgem ) is a Belgian politician of the Christian Democratic Party in Vlaams (CD&V). From November 2009 to December 2011 he was Belgian Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister in the Leterme II government . From December 6, 2011 to March 5, 2013, he was Minister of Finance in the Di Rupo government .

Life

After attending school in Sint-Stevens-Woluwe and Haasrode , Vanackere began studying at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven , where he obtained a degree in law in 1987 and a degree in economics in 1988 . He then worked for six months at the Kredietbank (now part of the KBC Group ) and then from 1988 onwards he worked for the study service of the Christelijke Volkspartij (CVP, since 2001 CD&V), CEPESS.

Vanackere worked from 1990 to 1991 as an advisor to the then CVP chairman Herman Van Rompuy and from 1991 to 1993 as deputy head of cabinet to the Brussels finance minister Jos Chabert . In October 1993 he took over the post of Director General of the Port of Brussels and held this position until April 2000. At the same time, he continued to work in Jos Chabert's cabinet from 1995 to 1999, where he now served as head of cabinet. In May 2000 he moved from the port of Brussels to the Brussels transport company MIVB , where he was Deputy General Director until 2005.

In 2004 Vanackere took part in an election for the first time as a candidate and was elected to the Flemish Parliament as one of six members of the Brussels Capital Region. In addition, on December 1, 2006, he took over the office of aldermen for economy and trade of the city ​​of Brussels at the local level .

On June 28, 2007 he was appointed Flemish Minister for Health and Family under Prime Minister Kris Peeters . He held this post until December 30, 2008, when he was appointed Minister of Public Service and Public Enterprises and Deputy Prime Minister in the Van Rompuy government at the federal level. After the resignation of Van Rompuy's government on November 25, 2009 and the appointment of Yves Leterme as the new Prime Minister, Vanackere succeeded him in the vacated post of Foreign Minister. From there he moved to the office of finance minister in the Di Rupo government on December 6, 2011. He resigned from this position on March 5, 2013 in the wake of a potential conflict of interest relating to banking.

Vanackere is married and has no children.
